At an elevation of 11,800 ft. above mean sea level, Yumthang is a high altitude tourist destination of Sikkim. Surrounded by snow capped mountains, this is a valley not quite far from the Chinese Boarder. In fact the mountain peaks all around are so close, for the uninitiated, it might seem a matter of minutes to reach from Yumthang. The river Lachung Chu passes through the valley although it is a small stream and hardly shows any sign of dangerous fury till it reaches Chungthang and meets Lachen Chu to form the river Tista. combination of Hill, Rock and River at Yumthang

Yumthang is about 140 kms from Gangtok and takes better part of the day to reach to the rough terrain. The hard days drive is well rewarded at Lachung which is a tranquil small village and the place for overnight stay before you visit Yumthang. Yumthang visit is ideal during the first half of the day when the weather remains at its best.

Apart from the natural beauty of the surrounding mountains, Yumthang is also known for the rhododendrons. The area falls under the Singba Rhododendron Sanctuary. During the months of April and May the whole valley comes to life with blooming rhododendrons. No wonder then that the valley is known as the Valley of flowers as well. why its called Switzerland of the EastThere is a hot spring in the valley known as the `Tsa-Chu`. The hot spring is very popular for its known curative and healing power. There is also an abandoned forest bungalow which may act as a backdrop for your photo sessions.

Katao and Yumey samdong are a couple of other tourist attractions in the vicinity of Yumthang, although there are restriction on visiting these places. One may drive to Lachen after visiting Yumthang. Lachen is the starting point for tours to high altitude lakes such as Gurudongma, Green lake etc.

Tourists require special permits to visit North Sikkim. The area can be visited only through some travel agency. Normal tours are of one or two nights duration from and to Gangtok. Cost and service standards of such tours vary widely.
