| Lachung Distance - 116 km ( from Gangtok ) Altitude
- 8800 ft. Lachung or small pass is a small hamlet 110 kms from Gangtok.
At almost 9000 ft. Lachung is a quaint Sikkimese village dominated
mostly by Bhutias. |
 |
| The village is perfect for understanding
the traditions and culture of the local people. There is an army cantonment
for border protection. It has a unique local self-governing body called
Zumsa which substitutes the Panchyat. Lachung is a small town towards
the northern extreme of Sikkim. A sleepy and secluded village even
a few years ago, Lachung today has become the hub of tourism activity
in North Sikkim. Tourists visiting north Sikkim attractions such as
Yumthang Valley, Katao and Yumasamdong use Lachung as the place for
overnight stay. The Yumthang valley is just 25 km from Lachung and
is an hour’s drive. The place is mostly dominated by Bhutias
and Lepchas. The presence of Indian army is quite overwhelming in
the area. Till very recently China disputed the North Sikkim and demanded
it is part of Tibet. Hence India deployed heavy army throughout North
Sikkim. Now the dispute is subdued with china accepting North Sikkim
as part of India. But the heavy army presence in the Northern District
still remains. The Landscape around Lachung is dotted with army cantonments. There
is a monastery in Lachung which can be visited in the evening. |

|
A handicraft centre offers local souvenirs; you can
also spend a quite evening besides the Lachung Chu river and enjoy
the snow capped peaks all around you. The Lachung village and the
surrounding areas have unique local self-governing body called the
Zumsa which substitutes the Panchayat system in the rest of the country.
