| Chungthang is a small town in north Sikkim. The
town is situated on the way to famous north Sikkim tourist destinations
of Yumthang and Gurudongma. The Chungthang town is where the road
bifurcates. One goes to Lachung from where you may visit Yumthang,
the valley of flowers. The other road goes to Lachen, the starting
point for tours to Gurudongma and Chopta valley area. Chungthang
is a small town surrounded by h mountains.
The town of Chungthang lies on the confluence of rivers Lachen
Chu and Lachung Chu Chu=River in Lepcha Language). After the confluence
the river is known as Tista. The most important river for the state
of Sikkim. The subdivisional town is known for the legend that Sikh
Guru admasambhava had visited this place while traveling to Tibet.
A rock in Chungthang is said to bear the footmark of the Guru even
today. This place is also commonly used by visitors to take a break
and have a snack before moving further towards Lachung or Lachen.
Chungthang onwards the area is mostly Lepcha dominated who have
preserved their unique culture to this date. |
