MAJULI - ISLAND :
Majuli is a river Island in Assam in the north east of India. This
is the Largest River Island in the World. The Island is known as the
cultural and spiritual capital of Assam and as a Bio-diversity hot
spot. It is known for its rich ecology and rare species of birds and
animals. Majuli Island is situated in the upper reaches of Brahmaputra.
The height of the Island is 84.5 Mt. above Mean Sea Level.

| The island has a population of 160,000
with a major tribal population. The Island is threatened by erosion
of river Brahmaputra. In 1950 a major earthquake shook the island
and since 1974 erosion has become a major problem. No permanent solution
to the problem has been found yet. UNESCO has declared the
island as a world heritage site. |

The economy of the area is mainly agrarian. The major
crops grown here is rice. The use of fertilizer is very low leading
to lower productivity but unique output. Most agricultural output
is at subsistence level. The Majuli Island is known as a visiting
place of Lord Krishna. A three day long Ras festival is organized
in the Island which depicts the life of Lord Krishna. The festival
is organized also in every village. The festival attracts a large
number of people from outside as well. |
