Kaziranga National Park :
The famous national park of North East India is known for its one
horned rhino. Located on the banks of Brahmaputra River in the far
North East of India, Assam, Kaziranga National Park covers an area
of approximately 430-sq-kms with its swamps and tall thickets of elephant
grass making it the ideal habitat for the Indian One-Horned Rhino.
The area was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1940. |

Wildlife Sanctuary :
The one-horned rhino is the main attraction of the region. The other
major attractions include an Elephants, Swamp Deer or Barasingha,
Hog Deer, Indian Bison, Sloth Bears, Tigers, Leopard Cats, Jungle
Cats etc. |

For people interested in ornithology, Kaziranga National
Park proves to be a paradise. The elephant grass is home for raptors
including the Oriental Honey Buzzard, Brahminy Kite, Grey-Headed Fishing
Eagle, Black-Shouldered Kite, Black Kite, Pallas's Fishing Eagle,
White Tailed Eagle, Himalayan Griffon, etc. A large number of migratory
birds visits the park during the winter. These birds include Greylag
Geese, Bar-Headed Geese, Ruddy Shelduck, Gadwall, Falcated Duck, Red-Crested
Pochard and Northern Shoveller and many others. |
| The Elephant Safari in the park is the
best way to visit inside the grass land. The vast open country makes
Kaziranga National Park very accessible and wildlife viewing pleasurable.
The elephant rides are organized in the early hours of morning. One
could see wild Elephant herds roaming around or Indian Rhinos browse
past visitors unconcernedly. |
Around Kaziranga :
Karbi Anglong with its lush coffee and rubber plantations becons tourists.
You may also visit the Karbi villages observe their way of living.
You can also venture through tea gardens of Assam and watch how tea
is produced. Film shows on wildlife is also arranged in the tourist
lodges in Kaziranga.
The best time to visit Kaziranga is November to April. The park remains
closed during the monsoon. Flooding is common during monsoon causing
animals to migrate from one area to another within the Kaziranga National
Park. |
