Culture and Festivals of Assam

The State of Assam is known for its multicultural facets. A large
number of Tribes and Subtribes have settled in this state giving it
a unique cultural heritage. The state is home for a large number of
colorful festivals. |

The most famous of them all is the Bihu.
The festival of Bihu takes place in three forms, Bohag Bihu or Rongali
Bihu in April, Magh Bihu or Bhogali Bihu in January and Kati Bihu
or Kongali Bihu in October/ November. |
| Bohag Bihu or Rongali Bihu is the most important Bihu.
It is celebrated across the region with gala fanfare by most of the
races that inhabit the state. Different races have their own festival.
The Bodo tribes celebrate Baisagu, The Rabha tribe celebrate Baikhu,
the Mising tribe Ali-Ai-Ligang and the Deoris tribe celebrate Bohhaggio
Bishu. All these festivals are celebrated around the same time as |

Rongali Bihu.
Around the time of Magh Bihu, the Miring tribe celebrate Nara-siga
Bihu, Pushy Par or Tushu Puja is celebrated by the tea tribes. Other
community festivals of Assam includes Rongker of Karbis, Rajini Gabra
and Harni Gabra of Dimasa tribe. |
| The festivals in Assam is mostly celebrated
by the whole community together. The simplicity of the festivals reflects
the simplicity of the people themselves. Usually the festivals are
celebrated in an open place known as Namghar. Bamboo
sticks and banana leaves are profusely used and nutritious food such
as sprouted grams and fruits are offered during worship. |
The Tourism department of Govt. of Assam organizes six
festivals every year to encourage tourists. These festivals are :

# Tea Festival
